Godly Maturity is Found in Knowledge
[This is a part of the 7 Lies Christians Believe Series. Have you read the other posts?]
Do you fall into the temptation that the more knowledge you obtain the better you are? For example, let’s say you go to school for 8 years so that you can become a doctor. But let’s say that after school you decide to go get a menial job making 6 bucks an hour.
Here you are thinking you are a doctor but you have decided to stock shelves instead. See something wrong with this picture? Just because you obtained all of this knowledge over the last 8 years doesn’t make you a doctor. In order to be a doctor you must do a doctor’s job. Without treating and saving lives you’re just a guy with a bunch of head knowledge.
This same truth applies in the Christian life. We can memorize tons of scripture, go to church 5 times a week, and win all of the theological debates but if this all we are then we are falling short of our true potential in Christ.
It’s About Transformation
What is probably the number one scripture used at weddings? 1 Corinthians 13 right? Also known as the love chapter. Here is portion of it,
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. -1 Cor. 13:4-7
If we just glance over this text we might think that this text sounds good. This is really great stuff right? It’s only great stuff when it is lived out. Do we read this text but then neglect our spouse? Do we read this text but lose our tempers at the drop of a hat?
As Christ followers we can’t just stuff our heads full of Churchyanity stuff. We must live to love and serve.
Memorize tons of scripture, listen to great sermons, read spiritually edifying books but let it transform you into the image of Christ,
who came not to be served, but to serve -Matt. 20:28
Have you been in danger of just storing up godly knowledge in you head without it transforming your character? Share in the comments.
